Finished measurements of poppy worked in medium weight (4) yarn are 6.5” (16.5 cm) in diameter.

Work with a firm gauge to help the flower hold its shape. I added eyelash yarn to the black yarn for the poppy center.

Materials: 2 colors of yarn (black and red), crocheting hook size 5.00 mm (H-8)

Stitches (sts):

Round 1: ch1, work 9 dc in ring; join with ss in first sc.

Rnd 2: ch1, *2sc in next stitch, ch3, 2sc in next st, (sc, ch3, sc) in next st; repeat from * 2 more times; join with ss in first sc (6ch-3spaces).

Cut six 6” (15cm) length of petal color yarn for use as padding yarn.

Rnd 5: *ss in 2nd ss of next petal, ss in next st; begin working over one 6” (15cm) length of yarn, sc in next st, (hdc, dc) in next st, ss-picot, (htr, ss-picot, htr, ss-picot) in next st, (tr, ss-picot, tr, ss-picot) in next st, (tr, ss-picot) in next 2 sts, (tr, ss-picot, tr, ss-picot) in next st, (htr, ss-picot, htr, ss-picot) in next st, (dc, hdc) in next st, sc in next st, ss in next 2 sts, ch3; repeat from * 5 more times; needle-join to first st.

Center: working with center color ch 5; join with ss in first ch to form a ring. Work 20-30 sc in the ring. Finish off. Attach to the middle of the flower.

Finishing:

  • Weave in yarn ends at the beginning and ending of the crocheting.
  • Weave in one end of the padding yarn on each petal, tacking it so it won’t come undone when you pill the other end. Adjust the padding for each petal by pulling the free end. When all petals are adjusted, the Poppy will be bowl shaped. Sew in or glue the other end of padding yarn and cut it off.
  • Push every other petal to the front if you desire.

Felting: Wash in hot water with bulky same color items. Dry in dryer once (or more) until it shrinks to the desired size.
