Materials

Simply Soft in bright green – 6 oz ball

Simply Soft in dark green or black – 50 yards or 1 oz

2 Green buttons of medium size

Key symbols

Ch = chain

Sc = single crochet

Hdc = half double crochet

Dc = double crochet

ss = slip stitch

St(s) = stitch(es)

Yo = yarn over

Decrease = yo, put hook into the next stitch, pull 1 yarn out, yo and pull it through 2 loops on hook (you should have 2 loops left on hook after this action), yo, put hook into the next stitch, pull 1 yarn out, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook. 19’’ to 21’’ head circumference. For bigger hat use directions in parentheses (Row 8a)

 

Directions

In bright green color.

Begin with 3 ch. Ss into the 1st ch to make a ring. (Or make a magic ring)

Row 1: 3ch (count as 1st dc), 11 dc into the ring, ss into the 3rd ch from the beginning. (Total 12 dc in this row)

Row 2: 3ch, dc into the same space as 1st ch, (2dc in next) around. (Total 24dc)

Row 3: 3ch, (2dc into next) around. (Total 47 dc)

Row 4: 3ch, (dc in next) 4 times, 2dc in next, [(dc in next) 5 times, 2dc in next] 6 times, (dc in next) 5 times, 1dc into the same space as the 1st ch of the row. (Total 55dc)

Row 5: 3ch, (dc in next) 5 times, 2dc in next, [(dc in next) 6 times, 2dc in next] 6 times, (dc in next) 6 times, 1dc into the same space as the 1st ch of the row. (Total 63dc)

Row 6: 3ch, (dc in next) 6 times, 2dc in next, [(dc in next) 7 times, 2dc in next] 6 times, (dc in next) 7 times, 1dc into the same space as the 1stch of the row. (Total 71dc)

Row 7: 3ch, (dc in next) 7 times, 2dc in next, [(dc in next) 8 times, 2dc in next] 6 times, (dc in next) 8 times, 1dc into the same space as the 1stch of the row. (Total 79dc)

Row 8: 3ch, (dc in next) 8 times, 2 dc in next, [(dc in next) 9 times, 2dc in next] 6 times, (dc in next) 9 times, 1dc into the same space as the 1stch of the row. (Total 87dc)

[Use this row if you have head circumference more than 21.5’’. Row 8a: 3ch, (dc in next) 9 times, 2dc in next, [(dc in next) 10 times, 2dc in next] 6 times, (dc in next) 10 times, 1dc into the same space as the 1stch of the row. (Total 95dc. Because you are doing this row your totals will NOT add up anymore, you will have more stitches at the end of each row than the original pattern calls for). Row 11: 3ch, [(dc in next) 9 times, decrease] 7 times, (dc in next) 9 times, ss into the 3rdch from the beginning of the row. (Total 80 dc)

Row 12: 3ch, [(dc in next) 8 times, decrease] 7 times, (dc in next) 9 times, ss into the 3rdch from the beginning of the row. (Total 73 dc)

Row 13: 3ch, [(dc in next) 7 times, decrease] 8 times, ss into the 3rdch from the beginning of the row. (Total 65 dc)

Row 14: 1ch, sc next stitch and around, ss into the 1stch of the row. (Total 65 sc)

Row 15: same as Row 14. (Total 65 sc)

Row 16: 1 ch, 19sc, 1hdc, 25dc, 1hdc, 19sc, ss into the 1stch. (Total 65 stitches)

Row 17: same as Row 16. (Total 65 stitches)

Row 18: 1ch, 19 sc, 1hdc, 2dc into next, 23dc, 2dc into next, 1hdc, 19 sc, ss into the 1stch. (Total 67 stitches)

Finish off.

Row 19: Work on the wrong side of visor. 27 sc.

Finish off. Hide ends of yarn.

5ch, ss into the 1stch to make a ring (this is your 1st ring).

Continue to make 30 more ch, ss into the 5thch from hook to make another ring (this is your 2nd ring).

Make 25sc into the 25 chains which connect the rings.

Make 10 sc into the 1st ring.

Make 25sc into the part that connects the rings (on the opposite side).

Make 10 sc into the 2nd ring.

Finish off. Hide ends.

 

Assembly

Sew two buttons above the visor and outside its edges. Button your panel up.  Ready to wear!

This is my version of the newsboy hat. I added the flower and left the brim out.

  • What a darling hat! I used to give away cectheord blankets. Now I prefer sewing. I’ve made a bunch of flannel self binding blankets and burp cloths. I made my sister a faux chenille blanket and will likely only make others for myself (fingers crossed, not an annoucement) or super close friends b/c they take a long time. I have also given the pretty packets of wipes and body butter. People here are having babies all the time and I can’t keep up with sewing.
