Orange Hat For Elaine

Materials:

3.25 mm five double pointed knitting needles

Crochet hook about the same size for finishing (optional)

Scissors

Lion Brand Yarn: Micro Spun or any other soft yarn of the same thickness (size 6 or 4mm knitting needles)

Size:

Newborn (this one is for a 6-7 lbs. baby)

Special Stitches:

C2F (cable stitch) = Slip one stitch purlwise to a cable needle, and hold to the front of the work.  Knit one stitch from the left needle.  Knit one stitch from the cable needle.

DP (decrease purl) = Take two stitches at the same time as if it is one stitch, purl. Makes one purl stitch.

DK (decrease knit) = Take two stitches at the same time as if it is one stitch, knit. Makes one knit stitch.

Instructions:

Cast on 60 stitches. Mark the end of the row. Split your work into 4 double pointed needles (15 stitches on each needle). Knit in rounds marking end of each row with a piece of yarn or a stitch marker.

Rows 1-5: 1K 1P around.

Rows 6-9: 2K 2P around.

Row 10: (first cable row) C2F, 2P around.

Rows 11-14: 2K 2P around.

Row 15: (fourth row after the previous cable stitch row) C2F 2P around.

Rows 16-19: 2K 2P around.

Row 20: (fourth row after the previous cable stich row) C2F 2P around.

Rows 21-25: 2K 2P around.

Row 26: (fifth row after the previous cable stitch row) C2F 2P around.

Rows 27-32: 2K 2P around.

Row 33: (sixth row after the previous cable stitch row) C2F 2P around.

Rows 34-38: 2K 2P around.

Row 39: 2K DP around. (45 stitches total)

Row 40: 2K 1P around.

Row 41: DK, 1P around. (30 stitches total)

Row 42: 1K 1P around.

Row 43: DK around. (15 stitches total)

Cut yarn 12 inches from work. Pull the remaining yarn through all 15 stitches using crochet hook or knitting needle. Pull tight to minimize the opening at the top of the hat.

Pull ends of remaining yarn to the inside of the hat. Weave about 2 inches around. Cut off the rest.  Repeat the same with the strand of yarn at the beginning of your work.
