Lollie Snowballs

Materials:

Red Heart Yarn – several colors

Crochet Hook – any size between 4.5 mm and 6 mm

Batting – any kind

Size:

Anywhere from 2.5 – 4 inches depending on thickness of yarn and size of hook.

Legend:

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

sc = single crochet

ss = slip stitch

dc decrease = yarn over (yo), put hook into the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2 (2 loops on your hook); yo, put hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 (3 loops on your hook); yo, pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

sc decrease =  put hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop; put hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop (3 yarns on your hook); pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Instructions:

4 ch. SS into the 1st ch to make a ring.

Row 1: 3ch (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), 11dc into the big ring of 4 chains. Ss (using a new color) into the top chain to complete a circle.  (12 stitches in this row).

Row 2: 3ch, dc into the same stitch, [2dc into next dc] x 11 times. Ss (using a different color) into the top chain to complete a circle. Ss into the opening between 2dc clusters. (24 stitches in this row).

Row 3: Crochet into spaces between each cluster of 2dc of previous row. 3ch, 2dc into the same opening between 2dc clusters. Skip one 2dc cluster. 2dc into the next opening between 2dc clusters. [Skip next 2dc cluster, 3 dc into the next opening, skip 2dc cluster, 2 dc into the next opening] repeat until the end of the row. Ss (using a different color) into the top ch to make a circle.  Ss into the opening between 1st and 2nd dc in a 3dc cluster. (30 stitches in this row).

Row 4: [3ch, 1dc] into space between 1st and 2nd dc of 3dc cluster. 2dc into space between 2nd and 3rd dc of 3dc cluster. 2dc into space between 1st and 2nd dc of the next 2 dc cluster. [2dc into space between 1st and 2nd dc of the next 3dc cluster. 2dc into space between 2nd and 3rd dc of the same 3dc cluster. 2dc into space between 1st and 2nd dc of the next 2dc cluster] repeat until the end of the row. Ss (using a different color) into the top chain to make a circle. (36 stitches in this row)

Rows 5 – 7: 3ch, 36 dc around into each stitch. Ss (using a different color) into the top of the first 3 chains. (36 stitches in this row).

Row 8: 3ch, 1 dc into the next 3 stitches, dc decrease. [4 dc, dc decrease] around. Ss (using a different color) into the top of the first 3 chains. (30 stitches in this row).

Row 9: 3ch, 2dc, dc decrease. [3dc, dc decrease] around. Ss (using a different color) into the top of the first 3 chains. (24 stitches in this row).

Stuff your almost completed snowball with batting. Continue working and decreasing with the stuffed snowball:

Row 10: 1ch, 1sc, sc decrease. [2sc, sc decrease] around. Ss (do not change color) into 1st chain of the row. (18 stitches in this row).

Row 11: 1ch, sc decrease. [1sc, decrease] around. Ss (do not change color) into the 1st chain of the row. (12 stitches in this row).

Row 12: Cut yarn about 12 inches from work. Pull yarn through each of the 12 loops and pull tightly together. Secure the end. Weave 2+ inches of the end. Cut off the rest.
