Crochet Rocket Rattle

Materials:

Empty plastic 2 liter bottle.

empty plastic baby wipe container

Polyester batting.

Beads, beans, rice, or any other grains for rattling inside the bottle.

Simply soft yarn (3-4 colors): red, blue, white, black.

Crochet hook size G (4.00 mm) for dense gauge.

Tapestry needle for sewing on flaps and windows.

Top of the rocket

Work in red color:

Start with magic loop (tutorial link) or 3 ch with ss connecting them into a ring.

Row1: 9 ch inside the magic loop. Ss into the 1st ch. Tighten the magic loop.

Row 2: 1 ch. put stitch marker into ch. *1 sc into next 2 stitches, 2 sc into next stitch* repeat 2 times until the end of the row. Do not ss at the end of the row. (Total 12 stitches).

Continue working in spirals and marking each 1st sc stitch of each next row with a stitch marker.

Row 3: *1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 sc into next stitch* repeat 2 more times. (15 sts).

Row 4: *1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 sc into next stitch* repeat 2 more times. (18 sts).

Row 5: *5 sc into next 5 stitches, 2 sc into 6th stitch* repeat 2 more times. (21 sts).

Row 6: *6 sc into next 6 stitches, 2 sc into 7th stitch* repeat 2 more times. (24 sts).

Row 7: * 7 sc into next 7 stitches, 2 sc into 8th stitch* repeat 2 more times. (27 sts).

Row 8: *8 sc into next 8 stitches, 2 sc into 9th stitch* repeat 2 more times. (30 sts).

Row 9: *9 sc into next 9 stitches, 2 sc into 10th stitch* repeat 2 more times. (33 sts). Row 10: *10 sc into next 10 sts, 2 sc into 11th st* repeat 2 more times. (36 sts).

Row 11: *11 sc into next 11 sts, 2 sc into 12th st* repeat 2 more times. (39 sts). Row 12: *12 sc into next 12 sts, 2 sc into 13th st* repeat 2 more times. (42 sts). Row 13: *13 sc into next 13 sts, 2 sc into 14th st* repeat 2 more times. (45 sts).

Row 14: *14 sc into next 14 sts, 2 sc into 15th st* repeat 2 times. (48 sts).

Row 15: *15 sc into next 15 sts, 2 sc into 16th st* repeat 2 times. (51 sts).

At this point, your tip of the rocket should almost touch the wide part of the plastic on the bottle.

If this is the case, continue working in rounds without increasing. (Optional: one or more rows with increases may be added if your work is still too far from the wide part of the bottle).

Ss into the 1st sc of the row. While slip stitching, switch color to blue. When switching to blue you may either cut red yarn leaving 2-3 inches long tail or choose to continue working with the red yarn attached to the project.

Work in blue color:

Continue marking the beginning sc of each row for convenience.

Row 16: 1ch. 51 sc around. Ss into the 1st chain at the end of the row. (51 sts).

Row 17: do not make 1 ch. 51 sc around. No ss at the end of the row. (51 sts).

Row 18, 19, 20: repeat Row 17. (51 sts).

Row 21: *16 sc into next 16 sts, 2 sc into 17th st* repeat 2 times. (54 sts).

Row 22, 23, 24: 54 sc around. Ss into the 1st sc of the row. While slip stitching, switch color to

while. You may cut blue yarn or leave it attached.

Work in white color:

Row 25: 1ch. 54 sc around. Ss into the 1st chain of the row. (54 sts).

Row 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39,

40, 41, 42, 43, and 44: Do not make 1ch. 54 sc around. Do not ss. (54 sts).

Row 45: 54 sc around. Ss into the 1st sc with blue yarn. (54 sts).

Work in blue:

Row 46: 1ch, 54 sc around, ss into the 1st sc. (54 sts).

Row 47: Do not make 1ch. 54 sc around. Do not ss. (54 sts).

Row 48: 54 sc around. Ss into the 1st sc using red yarn. (54 sts).

Work in red:

Row 49: 1 ch. 54 sc around. Ss into the 1st sc of the row. (54 sts).

Row 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, and 67: Do not make 1 ch. 54

sc around. Do not ss into the 1st st of the row. (54 sts).

Continue to work in red until you reach the bottom of the plastic bottle. On your last row use ss to connect the last stitch to the 1st stitch of the row. Finish off.

Twist the cap onto the bottle. Wrap batting around the bottle’s neck. Then, wrap a piece of baby wipe plastic container (for creating crinkling sounds) and secure it with plastic Scotch tape.

Bottom of the rocket

Work in black:

Make Magic Loop.

Row 1: make 12 sc into the magic loop. Ss into the 1st sc. Tighten the magic loop.

Mark beginning of each row with a stitch marker.

Row 2: 1 ch. *1 sc, 2 sc into next* repeat 5 more times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (18 sts).

Row 3: 1ch. *1 sc, 1 sc, 2 sc into next* repeat 5 more times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (24 sts).

Row 4: 1ch. *1sc, 1sc, 1sc, 2sc into next* repeat 5 more times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (30 sts).

Row 5: 1ch. *4 sc into next 4 stitches, 2 sc into 5th stitch* repeat 5 more times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (36 sts).

Row 6: 1ch. * 5 sc into next 5 stitches, 2 sc into 6th stitch* repeat 5 times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (42 sts).

Row 7: 1ch. *6 sc into next 6 stitches, 2 sc into 7th stitch* repeat 5 times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (48 sts).

Row 8: 1 ch. * 7 sc unto next 7 stitches, 2 sc into 8th stitch* repeat 5 times around. Ss into the 1st chain. (54 sts). Do not finish off.

Connect the top part of the rocket to the bottom of the rocket with sc around using black yarn. Ss last stitch into the first and finish off. Hide the ends.

Rocket flaps

Work in blue:

(Make 3 flaps)

18 ch.

Row 1: 1ch.18 sc across. Turn.

Row 2: 1 ch. 18 sc across. Turn.

Row 3: Do not make 1 ch. Skip 1st stitch. Make 16 sc across. Skip last stitch. Turn.

Row 4: Do not make 1ch. 16 sc across. Turn.

Row 5: Do not make 1 ch. Skip 1st stitch. Make 14 sc across. Skip last stitch. Turn.

Row 6: Do not make 1ch. 14 sc across. Turn.

Row 7: Do not make 1ch. Skip 1st stitch. 12 sc across. Turn.

Row 8: Do not make 1ch. 12 sc across. Turn.

Row 9: Do not make 1ch. Skip 1st stitch. 10 sc across. Turn.

Row 10: Do not make 1ch. 10 sc across. Turn.

Row 11: Do not make 1ch. Skip 1st stitch. 8 sc across. Turn.

Row 12: Do not make 1ch. 8 sc across. Turn.

Row 13: Do not make 1ch. Skip 1st stitch. 6 sc across. Turn.

Row 14: Do not make 1 ch. 6 sc across. Leave 16 inches and cut off.

Using tapestry needle and 16-inches of yarn, sew around the edges and stuff with batting before closing the opening completely.

After all 3 flaps are made and stuffed, attach them to the rocket body using tapestry needle and blue yarn. Sew on both sides of each flap when

attaching to the body for sturdiness and durability. Hide and cut off ends of sewing yarn.

Windows

Work in blue:

8 ch. Ss into a ring.

Row 1: 3 ch. 16 dc into the ring. Ss into the top chain. Finish off leaving 12-16 inch tail for sewing.

Make 6 windows.

Sew 2 windows between each rocket flap onto the body of the rocket with a tapestry needle and blue yarn.
